Argyreia nervosa, commonly known as Hawaiian baby woodrose, is a vigorous, evergreen perennial vine native to the Indian subcontinent and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. It is characterized by its large, heart-shaped leaves that can reach 6–12 inches across and are covered with soft, silvery hairs on the underside, giving the plant a velvety appearance. The vine produces long, twining stems that readily climb trellises, fences, or nearby vegetation. From late summer through fall, Argyreia nervosa bears striking, funnel-shaped flowers in shades of lavender to deep purple with darker throats, resembling large morning glory blooms. These showy flowers are followed by round, woody seed capsules containing several seeds. The plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers rich, well-draining soil with regular moisture. Its lush foliage and dramatic flowers make it popular as an ornamental climber, though it can grow aggressively in warm climates and requires space and support to develop properly. Zones 9-11
Germination
To germinate Argyreia nervosa seeds, start by preparing a seed starting tray or small pots filled with a well-draining seed starting mix, such as a blend of peat moss and perlite. Moisten the soil evenly, avoiding waterlogging. Argyreia nervosa seeds benefit from scarification to improve germination. Lightly nick or scratch the seed coat with sandpaper or a sharp knife. Then, soak the seeds in room temperature water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat. After scarification and soaking, sow the seeds evenly over the surface of the soil and lightly press them into the soil with your fingertips. Cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil. Place the tray or pots in a warm location with indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged by misting regularly or using a gentle watering can. Germination typically occurs within 2-4 weeks. Once the seedlings emerge, provide adequate spacing if growing in trays or transplant them into individual pots when they have developed a few sets of true leaves. Continue to care for the seedlings with proper watering, light, and nutrients as they grow into mature Argyreia nervosa plants.
